Favorite Run – San Francisco, CA: Fort Mason

There are so many amazing places to run that we want to help spread the word about some of your favorites. Maybe you will be visiting a new area and looking for a great running trail or in search of your next racecation. Whatever the case, we hope to highlight some of the best places to run around the world!
Up next to share her favorite run is Sarah (@alwyzsleepn on Instagram). She shares with us her favorite place to run on her lunch break...

Favorite Run: Fort Mason, San Francisco, CA

Runner: Sarah Location: Fort Mason, then along the Marina, up to the Presidio. However, when I need to do speed runs, I'll run at the SF Municipal Pier, and Aquatic Park --> The run takes me through two different National Park Service sites - the San Francisco Maritime National Park, and different portions of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, plus the Marina Green. Address: Golden Gate National Recreation Area, 2905 Hyde St, San Francisco, CA 94109 Fun Facts :  The San Francisco Municipal Pier was built in the early 1930s as a recreational pier. Today it continues to be heavily used by anglers but also is heavily trafficked by joggers and tourists visiting the area. // Fort Mason was previously a US Army Post, from 1864-1966, and was designated a National Historical Landmark in 1985. During WWII, it was the Army's designated logistics center for sending supplies to troops in the Pacific. // The Presidio is Home to the Letterman Digital Arts Center, where one can find a life size statue of Yoda; it's also home to the Walt Disney Family Museum. Distance: It can be as short as you want, or as long as you wish. Since I run at a leisurely pace, during my lunch hour, I get in about 2-3 miles in an out-and-back. However those with more time, or who wish to run longer distances can run to the Golden Gate Bridge, or get lost inside the Presidio.  Difficulty: Fairly easy. There are some hills if you wish to run them. The one unavoidable hill is up to Fort Mason, yet, my guestimate for elevation is 30-40 feet at most for that hill. Why You Love It: I love it because it's right outside the door of my office. It's a very scenic route, with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, or the San Francisco Bay. It's full of people, but at the same time I feel like I have the whole route to myself.
Parking: I take public transportation to work, so I've never needed to park. However, there is street parking, and parking garages near by.
Favorite Place To Eat Post-Run: I run during my lunch hour (RUNCH), so I will bring my lunch. However for others, In-N-Out, Chipotle, and for the ultimate treat, ice cream at Ghirardelli Chocolates. Sometimes, I'll grab a post run iced tea at the Starbucks on Beach and Hyde, featuring one of my favorite murals at a Starbucks.
A big thanks to Sarah for sharing her favorite run with us. We hope that this series turns into a list of super cool runs across the country and even internationally - that way if you are ever in the area you know of a recommended route from a fellow #teamsparkle member. Favorite Run – Culver City, CA: Ballona Creek Bike Trail

Whatever the case, we hope to highlight some of the best places to run around the world!
Up next to share her favorite run is Kelsey (@MsKelseyTara on Instagram). She shares with us her favorite place to run and her favorite places to eat post-run...

Favorite Run: Ballona Creek Bike Trail, Culver City, CA

Runner: Kelsey Location: Ballona Creek Bike Trail, Culver City, CA Address: The bike trail along the creek starts at Syd Kronenthal Park at 3459 McManus Avenue Culver City, CA, but there are also several other entrances along the trail. Fun Fact: Ballona Creek and Lagoon are named for the Ballona or Paseo de las Carretas land grant, dated November 27, 1839. The Machado and Talamantes families, co-grantees of the rancho, heralded from Baiona in northern Spain Distance: As long as you want! The path itself is 7 miles each way, but you can add on mileage on the beach bike path in either direction. Difficulty: Overall the trail it pretty flat, but there are grades each time the trail dips below surface streets. Why You Love It: I love running Ballona Creek because it allows me to tailor my run to whatever length I want. From the top of the trail to Marina Del Rey and the ocean is roughly 7 miles each way. At the Marina, I can continue on to the beach bike path and take it either north toward Santa Monica or south toward Manhattan Beach, adding on as much mileage as I need for that particular training run. And who doesn't love running on the beach? And since the lower half of the trail winds through wetlands there is a lot of diverse bird life to view.
Parking: According to the Ballona Creek website (available here http://ballonacreek.org/bike-path/), there is free parking near many of the entrances in residential areas.
Favorite Place To Eat Post-Run: I love to eat in Downtown Culver City, either at the Conservatory for Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa (https://www.conservatorycoffeeandtea.com/) if I'm in a coffee and pastry mood or Cafe Vida (http://www.cafevida.net/) if I feel like a full breakfast. Both are a little more than a half of a mile off of the Duquesne exit of the Ballona Creek Bike path. After food, have fun browsing downtown Culver City, the home of Sony Studios!

Meet #teamsparkle – @donosteph07 is pain free thanks to running

March 28, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 41538 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-03-28 12:36:39 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-03-28 20:36:39 [post_content] =>

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic is the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is Stephany, aka @donosteph07 on Twitter!

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Stephany: After a car accident broke my pelvic and collapsed a lung I became sedentary and gained weight. Between the weight gain and lack of muscle building the pain in my hips became chronic. I attempted several times to start an exercise routine to try to lose the weight, but would either lose interest or the pain would cause me to stop working out.
I heard about the Giants Race in San Francisco and it sounded like fun, but never really thought there was any way I would ever be able to run a race. So almost 2 years ago I decided to start running. I really didn't have a purpose, just thought it would be something I could do with my husband. We started running (really I was walking) a mile around the neighborhood. Those seemed like the longest miles ever. After a few months I was able to actually run a full mile without stopping. A friend of mine saw that my husband and I were running and she told us about a Police Officers Memorial Half Marathon and talked us into signing up. Signing up for a half marathon before we had even done a 5K (yeah, not smart). I remember struggling through it to finish. The pain in my hips was horrible. Then we got to the finish line and they handed me this medal; it was such an amazing feeling. I remember thinking "I want to do that again."
I have probably done just about everything possible in "what not to do if you want to run a half marathon," but I had a blast, made some amazing memories with my husband, daughters and friends, found a love for running, lost some weight and have no pain in my hips any more.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

S: I knew for my first half marathon I wanted to wear a cute outfit that fit the theme of the run and someone had told me about the skirts. I bought one and fell in love with them. I first joined #teamsparkle in September 2015. My first skirt was royal blue for the Police Officers Memorial run.

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

S: My husband and kids are such an amazing support system. My husband runs every mile with me, pushing me to keep going. He is the reason I have found I have the ability to run and that I know I  am strong enough. Knowing I have his support inspires me to continue.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

S: I'm a salty girl. I love tortilla chips. I don't even need a dip or salsa, just the salty tortilla chips.

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

S: My skirts. I love my skirts. When I run I am sure I look a mess. Red face, sweat dripping, and I'm sure you can see the exhaustion in my face, but I feel wearing a cute sparkly skirt takes the focus off my hot mess.

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

S: I love that they are light weight. No matter what look I am going for, I always have a skirt to match and I always get compliments on them.

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & every one of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Everyone has a story, and we want to hear YOURS! The #teamsparkle community is such a loving and inclusive group, but often times we are tackling our runs solo. Knowing your teammates can help you to feel more a part of the running community. If you would like to share your story, whether it is about how you got started running, what motivates your running, why you love running, or how running has changed your life, please let us know! We would love to feature you on an upcoming “Meet The Team” post – so email us at meettheteam@sparkleathletic.com!

Favorite Run – Calabasas, CA: Malibu Creek State Park

Maybe you will be visiting a new area and looking for a great running trail or in search of your next racecation. Whatever the case, we hope to highlight some of the best places to run around the world!
Up next to share her favorite run is Becky of @imarebelpilot. She shares with us her favorite trail to run (you've probably seen it on TV), and her favorite place to eat post-run...

Favorite Run: Malibu Creek State Park, Calabasas, CA

Runner: Becky Location: Malibu Creek State Park, Calabasas, CA Address: Grassland Trail - 34°05'48.6"N 118°42'58.6"W

Fun Fact:

If you run 3 miles on the trail and follow the signs, you will hit the MASH site where they used to film the TV show MASH. I have attached a photo of me in front of the sign on the show, a sign w/ some info of the location while shooting and one of the peaks thats pretty noticeable in a lot of episodes.

Distance:

You can get up to six miles done (three in and three out)

Difficulty:

Not too bad. A lot of families hike in. There's a couple big hills but they're awesome for getting hill work in! Why You Love It: The views are amazing. We're in a serious drought so everything is dry and kind of dead but if you go early in the morning like I do, the sun rises are amazing. And the colors on all of the mountains are gorgeous. Also, if you go early in the morning your chances of spotting some deer are pretty high!

Parking:

If you get there early you can park on the side of the road at the Grasslands trailhead. Otherwise you can pay about $12 to park in the Malibu Creek State Park parking lot and take one of the trailheads there to the MASH site.

Favorite Place To Eat Post-Run:

Usually I go straight home after and drag my boyfriend to a local restaurant called First Street Restaurant (it's on First Street!) and have some delicious breakfast! A big thanks to Becky for sharing her favorite run with us. We hope that this series turns into a list of super cool runs across the country and even internationally - that way if you are ever in the area you know of a recommended route from a fellow #teamsparkle member. Meet #teamsparkle – @matmilesmedals travels the world running

March 21, 2017

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic are the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is Briana, aka @matmilesmedals on social media!

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Briana: I am an adult-onset runner… after years of being a road warrior with a sedentary lifestyle, I started walking for fitness. A friend asked me to walk the Rock n Roll San Diego Half Marathon with her… the distance seemed daunting, but it also felt like a cool goal with a birthday looming around the corner. My first race was a half marathon! We power-walked the whole way, and I loved it! I saw people of all ages, shapes and abilities pushing themselves and it was inspiring. I then set a goal to finish a half marathon in under 3 hours and started running intervals… now I run races! A year later, I finished Rock n Roll San Diego over an hour faster, which remains one of my most memorable finishes! I used to travel extensively for work. Now I’ve swapped my work travel (mostly) for race travel! I’ve found running helps me experience places in a whole new way, whether I’m racing or taking a morning run. When a work trip took me to London a couple of years ago, I explored a lot of Hyde Park on a long run… more than I ever would have if I were just walking around the city as a tourist. Because I’ve decided to make racecations part of my running strategy, I’ve traveled to many new-to-me places, including Vancouver BC, Virginia Beach and San Antonio, TX. My first year of racing (2013), I finished two half marathons. I’ve steadily increased the number each year… in 2016, it was 18 half marathons (15 of which were Rock n Roll races, qualifying me for “Hall of Fame”). I'm excited to run my 50th half marathon in 2017.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

B: I joined #teamsparkle at my first race (Rock n Roll San Diego 2013)! I had never seen anyone run in a skirt, but my friend was insistent that we would have more fun wearing Sparkle Athletic. I bought a pink skirt so we’d match (she already had one). She was totally right… racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt always makes me smile!

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

B: I used to travel about 90% for work. I was overweight and uncomfortable in my skin. In addition to improving my level of fitness and health, running has given me a new confidence, more energy and a better outlook on life. I run to continue to improve on the person I’ve become personally and physically.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

B: I’m a big foodie! One of my favorite things to do is eat cuisine local to the area I’m visiting (poutine in Montreal, deli in NYC, lobster rolls in New England, breakfast tacos in Texas, etc.) I’d have to say my favorite is chicken and waffles… love the sweet/savory combo!

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

B: I’m all about the Sparkle Athletic skirts… both the specialty/patterned and the classic skirts. I’ve created so many fun ensembles with them and mixed & matched them in a myriad of ways. I get to dress up with my friends… they say when you feel good about what you’re wearing, you perform better. My 5K, 10K and Half Marathon PRs were all set in Sparkle Athletic skirts.

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

B: I always know I’m a part of a community when I wear a Sparkle Athletic skirt. I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with people during races because of my skirt. We cheer each other on. Even if I’m running by myself, if I’m wearing Sparkle Athletic, I’m never alone.

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & everyone of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Everyone has a story, and we want to hear YOURS! The #teamsparkle community is such a loving and inclusive group, but often times we are tackling our runs solo. Favorite Run – Lewisberry, PA: Gifford Pinchot State Park

March 16, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 40422 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-03-16 10:31:05 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-03-16 18:31:05 [post_content] =>
There are so many amazing places to run that we want to help spread the word about some of your favorites. Maybe you will be visiting a new area and looking for a great running trail or in search of your next racecation. Whatever the case, we hope to highlight some of the best places to run around the world! Up next to share her favorite run is @tinythunderr.

Favorite Run: Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, PA

Runner: Jodi Location: Lewisberry, PA (about 30 minutes from Harrisburg) Address: 2200 Rosstown Road  Lewisberry, PA 17339-9787  or Lat. 40.087  Long. -76.888

Fun Fact:

There are two entrances to the trail, one is called Conewago and Quaker Day Use. If you start at the Quaker side in the summer, you can go for a swim after to cool off!

Distance:

You can really run whatever distance you want. If you run a full loop around, you can get anywhere from 8.5-9 miles depending on what paths you take. You can also do smaller out and backs of whatever distance you want.

Difficulty:

Relatively easy trail.

Why You Love It:

I love this route because a) it’s trail, b) it’s within a half hour of home so easy to get there even during the week for a longer run and c) it’s beautiful year round. There is actually a mid-winter half marathon held here called Squirelly Tail Twail Wun that is quite a fun challenge as well.   Parking:  Both entrance areas are well equipt with parking. This is a state park so there’s plenty of space to park. Favorite Place To Eat Post-Run: There is a local ice cream place called Reeser’s that has burger and fry type options plus delicious ice cream. This is a great place to hit up after a nice, hot, sweaty summer run as well! A big thanks to Jodi for sharing her favorite run with us. We hope that this series turns into a list of super cool runs across the country and even internationally - that way if you are ever in the area you know of a recommended route from a fellow #teamsparkle member. If you’d like to be featured on an upcoming Sparkle Athletic “Favorite Runs” post, please email us at favoriteruns@sparkleathletic.com.

Meet #teamsparkle – @run8va is a founding father of #menofteamsparkle

March 14, 2017

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic are the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is Joe, aka @run8va on social media!

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Joe: I started running in 2011 after auditioning to join the U.S. Army band and needed to lose weight. I began with a 1-2 miles every 2 or 3 days. After a few weeks I thought to myself, “If I’m out running anyway I should sign up for a 5k.” Which became if I can do 3 miles then surely I can do 6… then 13.1… then 26.2. I went from running my first mile in September to running my first marathon in January just 4 months later. It’s not a path that I recommend people following, but it was the path that put me on the road. (Both figuratively and literally). In 2012, my first year of marathoning, I completed 5 marathons. It was during this year that I decided to set a bucket list goal of completing a marathon in all 50 states. Something that seemed daunting at the time, something that was a long shot and unobtainable. Since then I have completed 40+ marathons in 18 different states with 5 new states on the calendar for 2017. I have run back to back marathons in a weekend before, completing the Mitten Challenge in 2014 at the Wisconsin and Kalamazoo Marathons, and in 2015 I completed the Dopey Challenge in Walt Disney World running a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon on 4 consecutive days. I have been fortunate enough to join with pace teams at marathons around the southeast U.S. and help lead others to their goal race times.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

J: I was fundraising for St. Jude as a participant in the 2014 Tinkerbell Half Marathon in Disneyland and reached out to Sparkle Athletic as part of an idea to push donations. The idea was simple, after reaching my fundraising goal I would commit to running the race in a Sparkle Athletic skirt, visor, and wings and I would let one person who donated choose the color. The donations rolled in and I met my goal in under a week! The first skirt that I wore was gunmetal, along with the visor and wings.

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

J: Since 2012, I have been committed to fundraising for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and have always strived to make an effort to utilize running as an outreach to do good stuff. I have run in over a dozen races through the St. Jude Hero program and have been fortunate enough through the goodwill of friends, family, and supporters to have raised over $12,000 benefiting the patients St. Jude.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

J: It is a challenge every day to balance out my love of running with my love of Oreos. But on race day, it’s the mid-race and post race donuts that I love to get my hands on.

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

J: My visors! Everyday, every mile. I have over a dozen Sparkle Athletic visors that I wear. You can imagine the looks I get running around in small town, MS.

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

J: As a self proclaimed founding father of #MenofTeamSparkle, wearing the skirt on the race course creates a statement of self confidence. It speaks to the world around you that the run is what’s important and the little bit of joy you can spread to the people you encounter on the run.

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & everyone of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Everyone has a story, and we want to hear YOURS! The #teamsparkle community is such a loving and inclusive group, but often times we are tackling our runs solo.

Race Day Running Essentials – Angela’s race day running essentials

March 9, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 41917 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-03-09 11:18:09 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-03-09 19:18:09 [post_content] =>
Laying out your #FlatSparkle prior to a race (or even a training run) can help calm some of the pre-run jitters by helping to make sure you have everything you need when the starting gun goes off. Today Angela is here to share with us some of her race day essentials…

Angela's Race Day  Running Essentials

Like most runners, I start preparing for RACE DAY a week or so in advance! I begin by grabbing my favorite sparkle skirt, and piece it together from there! I've used two other brands of running/athletic skirts prior to finding Sparkle Athletic. I knew I had found the perfect skirt after my first run! I could have done jumping jacks or even jump hurdles and the skirt wouldn't budge! I love that the fabric is soft, doesn't scratch and has the perfect length! I've used both black compression shorts and black capris under the skirts, and they always compliment the ensemble! My sparkle visor just recently made its debut and it's a keeper! The visor is comfy, stretchy and a show stopper!
I pair my race day outfits with a few essentials that make every race day Sparktacular!!
A must for me is my Apple watch for tracking my race stats with the Nike+ app! After using Garmin watches, I've switched over to the Apple Watch! I LOVE this watch because it provides TWO options to track your run! It has a built in workout app that allows you to customize your screen while running. I also have the Nike+ app (free*) because I've been tracking my miles for years on it.
I also use the Nathan hydration belts and single bottles to stay fueled throughout the race. Yay for their hydration belts, vests and bottles! I always use Nathan brand because of their durability and accessibility during my run! Rain or shine they hold up well! The belt offers 3 bottles, in which I fill two with water, and one with Gatorade. I also slip some energy blocks in the zippered pouch!! This provides me with all the fuel I need for my longer runs, including marathons! I stay well hydrated before, during and after my longest of races! Your local running store should sell a variety of Nathan gear, along with other hydration devices!
I'm so glad that running has become more popular with every year that goes by, because there's more gear to choose from! A GREAT race means being well prepared!

A big thanks to Angela for sharing some of her race day essentials with #teamsparkle.

As we all know, race day can be a stressful time. One way to relieve some of the pressure is by making sure you have everything you may need when the starting gun goes off. Whether you are traveling across the country for a racecation or down the street for a local race, having a list and checking it twice to make sure you have all of your necessities can be the difference between a successful race and a stressful race. Everyone is different when it comes to what they need or desire on race day, which is why we thought asking the amazing #teamsparkle community about their race day essentials could be a great resource for us all. Maybe it will serve as a reminder of something you forgot to pack or tip you off to a new product you’d like to try. If you’d like to be featured on an upcoming Sparkle Athletic “Race Day Essentials” post, please email us at raceday@sparkleathletic.com.

Meet #teamsparkle – @runtheimpossible uses running to express her creativity

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic are the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is Katie, aka @runtheimpossible on social media!

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Katie: Living near Walt Disney World, I had always wanted to participate in runDisney events.  In 2016, I made the choice to run the Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon and never looked back!  We made it a goal to run every Disney race there is!  We are currently running every race between Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend 2016 and Tinkerbell Half Marathon Weekend 2017. Next up is Disneyland Paris!  Running is a wonderful outlet, great exercise, and a super fun way to express your creativity.  As a former cosplayer and gym-goer, I realized I could combine the two and make fun running costumes!

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

K: I joined #Team Sparkle in February of 2016!  I had borrowed a few skirts from friends for local races and I wanted my own!  My first one was my Neon Pink Specialty skirt for my R2-KT costume.  It is still one of my favorite skirts because it is so vibrant.  I have well over 30 skirts now because I like being able to have a skirt for every costume that pops into my mind.

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

K: I really love to set challenges for myself.  I am inspired to keep running to keep improving.  Running is incredible because even if your time is 5 seconds better than the last one, it is still a huge personal achievement.  I may not be the fastest runner, but I have an amazing time on the course.  Running is a wonderful blend of physical endurance and mental strength.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

K: Ice Cream is my favorite treat!!  I love to have a cold bowl of Ice Cream after a long training run.  Training in Florida can get super hot, even year round!  Ice Cream is the perfect treat for a long run.  My tradition after a Disney Half Marathon is to get a bag of Cheetos and walk around the park.  I tried to think of something I don’t let myself eat very often and decided I can cheat after 13.1 miles.

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

K: For the last few months I’ve been relying heavily on my Pretty Cosmos skirt.  It has just a little bit of Sparkle in all the right places so it looks amazing in photographs.  It also has so many colors it is easy to pair with any solid color running top.  It is also fantastic for a rainy day run, the rain blends right in with the galaxy print and it sparkles even more!

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

K: I feel faster in a Sparkle Athletic skirt.  I like the way they swish and move when I run.  I LOVE the way they look in photographs. I also love that I can wear any bottoms I like with them.  If we travel for a run, sometimes I’ll pack two or three different bottoms if the weather is changing.  It’s an easy switch the morning of the race and my skirt looks great with everything!

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & every one of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Everyone has a story, and we want to hear YOURS! The #teamsparkle community is such a loving and inclusive group, but often times we are tackling our runs solo. Favorite Run – St Louis, MO: Forest Park

Maybe you will be visiting a new area and looking for a great running trail or in search of your next racecation. Whatever the case, we hope to highlight some of the best places to run around the world!
Up next to share her favorite run is @emilytravels. Although she loves to travel the world and is a native Seattleite, she is now residing in the Midwest and thought it best to share a route from that neck of the woods.

Favorite Run: Forest Park in St. Louis, MO

Runner: Emily Location: Forest Park (St Louis, MO) Address: 5595 Grand Drive, St. Louis, MO 63112 (Visitor's Center)

Fun Fact:

It was host to the 1904 World’s Fair and is one of the largest urban parks in the United States.

Distance:

It is approximately 5.6 miles around the perimeter, however there are a number of paths within the park, plus the neighborhoods surrounding the park.  I like to start near Turtle Park, head east by the zoo, circle around the Jewel Box and catch back up with the perimeter path and follow it to the Visitor Center.

Difficulty:

Moderate – it is relatively flat, but you can easily find hills!  For an extra challenge, you can often find people running Art Hill or the steps to the World's Fair Pavilion.  The trails are a mix of paved and gravel roads.

Why You Love It:

I love watching the seasons change within the park.  The frost melts into spring blossoms which fade to summer blooms before giving way to autumn leaves.  The view looking up Art Hill is one of my favorites in St. Louis.  Plus there is always something happening in the park and so much to do besides running – from the zoo to the museums to the different festivals throughout the year.  There are water fountains and bathrooms throughout (although not all are open during the winter).

Parking:

The visitor center has a large parking lot, however there is abundant street parking throughout.

Favorite Place To Eat Post-Run:

half & half (in Clayton) has delicious French Toast (but plan ahead because they get busy!). A big thanks to Emily for sharing her favorite run with us. We hope that this series turns into a list of super cool runs across the country and even internationally - that way if you are ever in the area you know of a recommended route from a fellow #teamsparkle member. Meet #teamsparkle – @plaidtink runs for the kids

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is Christina, aka @plaidtink.

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Christina: I was always that kid that dreaded PE especially the day we had to run the mile. Flash forward to 2014 and I decided I wanted to run a half marathon but not just any half marathon - a Disney one. I was a Cast Member at the time and I'd worked countless races, and I wanted that bling! I discovered I'd missed registration for the Disneyland Half 2014 and it was sold out. I started checking out the charity partners and found Team Muscle Makers for UCMD and the rest is history! I've now completed 7 half marathons, 3 10ks, and a few 5ks.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

C: I discovered Sparkle Athletic at the Disneyland Half Marathon Expo in 2014. I was looking for a fun shirt to run my first half in and got myself a "Blood Sweat Sparkle" tank. My first skirt was the black sparkle because black goes with everything!!

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

C: My reason for running is twofold. I run for the kids who can't. Team Muscle Makers helps fund a muscle disease clinic at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, CA. My teammates and their families have become family and it's an honor to join them to do so much good.
My other reason for running is to be an example for my kids. I want to be around for them for a long time and leading a healthier lifestyle is going to help me do that. My oldest son has caught the running bug as well and is training for his first 10k.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

C: I can only pick one?! If it's sweet I'm in. Cupcakes, donuts, macarons, I could keep going...

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

C: Skirts are definitely my go-to! I wear them to the gym, races, spectating. There are so many colors and they pair perfectly with my TMM shirts.

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

C: Besides looking awesome, the skirts are perfect over my shorts or leggings. They don't slide or bunch up. I get tons of compliments especially from the kids at my kids' school!

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & everyone of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Everyone has a story, and we want to hear YOURS! The #teamsparkle community is such a loving and inclusive group, but often times we are tackling our runs solo.

“Strong Ladies That Move” Running Playlist – @sharpendurance

Looking for some tunes to get you pumped for your run? Never fear, Sparkle Athletic is here and we’ve got you covered!

Next up is a running playlist from Linzie, aka @sharpendurance on social media.

"Strong Ladies That Move" Running Playlist by @sharpendurance

Hey Team Sparkle also known as Team Awesome! I know there are lots of people that may need a hand in building the right playlist for the right moment. If you are anything like me, music drives you. It is truly part of who I am at my core. When Sparkle asked me to lend a hand a curate a playlist for the blog, I couldn't resist. They gave me full control (which is always dangerous you never know what the heck I will do) to create something that keeps people motivated and moving. The first thing that came to mind was strong women in entertainment. Women that work hard and inspire other women to do the same. This is how the "Strong Ladies That Move" playlist was born. I tried to build the playlist in such a way that it started easy, progressed into a faster pace, and relaxed back into a nice groove as you celebrate your accomplishment. It's an hour of pure fun and high energy and I hope you enjoy it. If you don't listen to music while you run, that's totally cool. This playlist is great for the car, walking the dog, making dinner, doing Sudoku, whatever floats your boat! ‘Independent Women, Pt. I’ by Destiny's Child ‘What About Us’ by Brandy ‘Can't Hold Us Down’ by Christina Aguilera ‘If’ by Janet Jackson‘Lose Control’ by Missy Elliott, Fatma ‘Circus’ by Britney Spears 'Gimmie Dat' by Ciara ‘What About Your Friends’ by TLC ‘Fantasy’ by Mariah Carey, O.D.B. ‘Focus’ by Ariana Grande 'Lady Marmalade' by Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya, Pink 'Play' by Jennifer Lopez 'All Hands on Deck' by Tinashe 'Freakum Dress' by Beyonce 'Part Of Me' by Katy Perry We may be a little bias, but we think the song choices Linzie made will help kick your running playlist up a notch. No matter your distance or speed, these songs are just the tunes to get your feet moving as you head out the door. We all know how music can effect our moods and even our workouts. As runners we often turn to music for motivation and, at times, to take our mind off of the miles. Having the perfect song at the right moment, whether it be when you are conquering a long run or tackling a fast interval on the treadmill, can be the difference between ending your run on a high note or simply finishing flat. The #teamsparkle community is such an amazing resource that we want to hear from YOU to find out what you are listening to, what is helping you to rock your runs and what is a must on every runner’s playlist. The best songs have the ability to keep us going mile after mile and we want to be a resource for one another so that we can run longer, run faster, but also run happy. Some songs may be old, some songs may be new, some songs may be trendy, some songs may be underground, but as long as the beats are pumping and inspiring us to put one foot in front of the other, then it is music to our ears! If you’d like to be featured on an upcoming Sparkle Athletic “Running Playlist” post, please email us at runningplaylist@sparkleathletic.com. We’d love to hear what songs made your cut and which ones we should add to our ever-growing playlist. **Please remember to use caution when listening to music while running, especially if you are pounding the pavement outdoors. A few suggestions would be to run with one earbud out or to do your best to keep the volume low enough so you can clearly hear your surroundings. It may be hard, especially when you want to rock out to your favorite track, but safety first!** [post_title] => "Strong Ladies That Move" Running Playlist - @sharpendurance [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => strong-ladies-that-move-running-playlist-sharpendurance [to_ping] => [pinged] => http://sparkleathletic.com/team-sparkle/ [post_modified] => 2017-02-22 11:45:01 [post_modified_gmt] => 2017-02-22 19:45:01 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://sparkleathletic.com/?p=41568 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw )

Meet #teamsparkle – @jennmascari runs for so many reasons

February 21, 2017

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic is the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is the amazing Jenn, aka @jennmascari.

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Jenn: I started running in 2011 on a complete whim because my dear friend/teaching partner (now my BRF) came up to me after school one day and said, "Hey, we're going to run the L.A. Marathon!" We weren't even runners yet. We then joined the local YMCA and started a "Couch to 5k" app on the treadmills. We slowly but surely started completing our runs and started entering races. We did a local 5k in 2011 (our "graduation" from the Couch to 5k app). The Disneyland Half Marathon in 2012 (our first half). And then in 2013, we completed the L.A. Marathon. Since then I have completed hundreds of training runs and runs for fun and runs for me. To date, I have completed 14 5Ks, 14 10Ks, 18 half marathons, and 2 fulls. The half marathon is by far my favorite racing distance and my goal is to one day break 2 hours.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

J: My first race with #teamsparkle was my first half marathon, the 2012 Disneyland Half. I wore the purple skirt since purple is my favorite color. I did a Google search for "running skirts" and found Sparkle Athletic. I read about the company and found out it was started and run by three ladies/moms and I knew I was in. I love everything that they stand for.

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

J: I initially started running to possibly lose some baby weight and "get into shape." It quickly became something much more. Our 10-year-old son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), specifically Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, and Anxiety when he was 6. During this time was when my running began. In training for that first marathon, I learned to love running. It wasn't just about the running itself but the escape. Running became my break from the craziness at home. It became my therapy session. And it still is, but now I am running to raise money and help raise awareness for Autism. I have been a charity runner twice with Autism Speaks. The first time was for the 2014 Tinkerbell Half Marathon weekend. I raised almost $2000 then. I then was a charity runner again for the Los Angeles Marathon in 2016 raising almost $1500 for Autism Speaks. I also use the app Charity Miles that I log all my runs with and always mark Autism Speaks as my charity of choice. It's my goal to fundraise again in 2017 for Autism Speaks. Lately, my mother has been my inspiration. My mom unexpectedly passed away on October 28, 2016. My mom was my BIGGEST supporter and fan when it came to my running. She knew every race that I was running and would track my runs through the RunKeeper app. She was the first to like any of my running posts and would always call me so I could tell her about my runs. She knew about me running the Rock n Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon, and that it was the last race in the Cali Combo. So, 2 days after she passed away, I ran that race. My family and friends (especially the ones in the running community) were totally supportive of my decision to run. That was the hardest run I had ever done. My BRF was with me and we ran, talked, and cried the entire 13.1 miles. Losing my mother has been devastating but I know she’s always with me, especially when I run.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

J: Ooooooo. I have a few favorites. My favorite post-run breakfast is an amazing breakfast burrito because who doesn't love eggs, potatoes, and bacon all wrapped up in a tortilla with pico de gallo and guacamole! I also love drinking chocolate milk after a race. As far as sweet treats, I love them all...donuts, cupcakes, cookies, cake. You name it.

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

J: Hands down the skirts and visors. I have worn a sparkle skirt for every single race I have run and can always find one that will match what I wear to race in. The visors are something that I can wear on race day and every day. I especially like wearing my sparkle visor for early morning runs when it's still dark because they are reflective and let cars know I'm out there!

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

J: I love that my 7-year-old daughter wants to help me pick out my race outfits and skirts. She has her own skirts now and will wear them to her annual jog-a-thon at school and to local 5K's (when I can convince her to join me). She tells me she loves the skirts and wants to me just like me.

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & every one of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.
