Looking for some tunes to get you pumped for your run? Never fear, Sparkle Athletic is here and we’ve got you covered!

Next up is a running playlist from Linzie, aka @sharpendurance on social media.

"Strong Ladies That Move" Running Playlist by @sharpendurance

Hey Team Sparkle also known as Team Awesome! I know there are lots of people that may need a hand in building the right playlist for the right moment. If you are anything like me, music drives you. It is truly part of who I am at my core. When Sparkle asked me to lend a hand a curate a playlist for the blog, I couldn't resist. They gave me full control (which is always dangerous you never know what the heck I will do) to create something that keeps people motivated and moving. The first thing that came to mind was strong women in entertainment. Women that work hard and inspire other women to do the same. This is how the "Strong Ladies That Move" playlist was born. I tried to build the playlist in such a way that it started easy, progressed into a faster pace, and relaxed back into a nice groove as you celebrate your accomplishment. It's an hour of pure fun and high energy and I hope you enjoy it. If you don't listen to music while you run, that's totally cool. This playlist is great for the car, walking the dog, making dinner, doing Sudoku, whatever floats your boat! ‘Independent Women, Pt. I’ by Destiny's Child ‘What About Us’ by Brandy ‘Can't Hold Us Down’ by Christina Aguilera ‘If’ by Janet Jackson‘Lose Control’ by Missy Elliott, Fatma ‘Circus’ by Britney Spears 'Gimmie Dat' by Ciara ‘What About Your Friends’ by TLC ‘Fantasy’ by Mariah Carey, O.D.B. ‘Focus’ by Ariana Grande 'Lady Marmalade' by Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya, Pink 'Play' by Jennifer Lopez 'All Hands on Deck' by Tinashe 'Freakum Dress' by Beyonce 'Part Of Me' by Katy Perry We may be a little bias, but we think the song choices Linzie made will help kick your running playlist up a notch. No matter your distance or speed, these songs are just the tunes to get your feet moving as you head out the door. We all know how music can effect our moods and even our workouts. As runners we often turn to music for motivation and, at times, to take our mind off of the miles. Having the perfect song at the right moment, whether it be when you are conquering a long run or tackling a fast interval on the treadmill, can be the difference between ending your run on a high note or simply finishing flat. The #teamsparkle community is such an amazing resource that we want to hear from YOU to find out what you are listening to, what is helping you to rock your runs and what is a must on every runner’s playlist. The best songs have the ability to keep us going mile after mile and we want to be a resource for one another so that we can run longer, run faster, but also run happy. Some songs may be old, some songs may be new, some songs may be trendy, some songs may be underground, but as long as the beats are pumping and inspiring us to put one foot in front of the other, then it is music to our ears! If you’d like to be featured on an upcoming Sparkle Athletic “Running Playlist” post, please email us at runningplaylist@sparkleathletic.com. We’d love to hear what songs made your cut and which ones we should add to our ever-growing playlist. **Please remember to use caution when listening to music while running, especially if you are pounding the pavement outdoors. A few suggestions would be to run with one earbud out or to do your best to keep the volume low enough so you can clearly hear your surroundings. It may be hard, especially when you want to rock out to your favorite track, but safety first!** [post_title] => "Strong Ladies That Move" Running Playlist - @sharpendurance [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => strong-ladies-that-move-running-playlist-sharpendurance [to_ping] => [pinged] => http://sparkleathletic.com/team-sparkle/ [post_modified] => 2017-02-22 11:45:01 [post_modified_gmt] => 2017-02-22 19:45:01 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://sparkleathletic.com/?p=41568 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw )

Meet #teamsparkle – @jennmascari runs for so many reasons

February 21, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 40391 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-02-21 14:38:44 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-02-21 22:38:44 [post_content] =>

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic is the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is the amazing Jenn, aka @jennmascari.

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Jenn: I started running in 2011 on a complete whim because my dear friend/teaching partner (now my BRF) came up to me after school one day and said, "Hey, we're going to run the L.A. Marathon!" We weren't even runners yet. We then joined the local YMCA and started a "Couch to 5k" app on the treadmills. We slowly but surely started completing our runs and started entering races. We did a local 5k in 2011 (our "graduation" from the Couch to 5k app). The Disneyland Half Marathon in 2012 (our first half). And then in 2013, we completed the L.A. Marathon. Since then I have completed hundreds of training runs and runs for fun and runs for me. To date, I have completed 14 5Ks, 14 10Ks, 18 half marathons, and 2 fulls. The half marathon is by far my favorite racing distance and my goal is to one day break 2 hours.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

J: My first race with #teamsparkle was my first half marathon, the 2012 Disneyland Half. I wore the purple skirt since purple is my favorite color. I did a Google search for "running skirts" and found Sparkle Athletic. I read about the company and found out it was started and run by three ladies/moms and I knew I was in. I love everything that they stand for.

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

J: I initially started running to possibly lose some baby weight and "get into shape." It quickly became something much more. Our 10-year-old son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), specifically Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, and Anxiety when he was 6. During this time was when my running began. In training for that first marathon, I learned to love running. It wasn't just about the running itself but the escape. Running became my break from the craziness at home. It became my therapy session. And it still is, but now I am running to raise money and help raise awareness for Autism. I have been a charity runner twice with Autism Speaks. The first time was for the 2014 Tinkerbell Half Marathon weekend. I raised almost $2000 then. I then was a charity runner again for the Los Angeles Marathon in 2016 raising almost $1500 for Autism Speaks. I also use the app Charity Miles that I log all my runs with and always mark Autism Speaks as my charity of choice. It's my goal to fundraise again in 2017 for Autism Speaks. Lately, my mother has been my inspiration. My mom unexpectedly passed away on October 28, 2016. My mom was my BIGGEST supporter and fan when it came to my running. She knew every race that I was running and would track my runs through the RunKeeper app. She was the first to like any of my running posts and would always call me so I could tell her about my runs. She knew about me running the Rock n Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon, and that it was the last race in the Cali Combo. So, 2 days after she passed away, I ran that race. My family and friends (especially the ones in the running community) were totally supportive of my decision to run. That was the hardest run I had ever done. My BRF was with me and we ran, talked, and cried the entire 13.1 miles. Losing my mother has been devastating but I know she’s always with me, especially when I run.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

J: Ooooooo. I have a few favorites. My favorite post-run breakfast is an amazing breakfast burrito because who doesn't love eggs, potatoes, and bacon all wrapped up in a tortilla with pico de gallo and guacamole! I also love drinking chocolate milk after a race. As far as sweet treats, I love them all...donuts, cupcakes, cookies, cake. You name it.

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

J: Hands down the skirts and visors. I have worn a sparkle skirt for every single race I have run and can always find one that will match what I wear to race in. The visors are something that I can wear on race day and every day. I especially like wearing my sparkle visor for early morning runs when it's still dark because they are reflective and let cars know I'm out there!

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

J: I love that my 7-year-old daughter wants to help me pick out my race outfits and skirts. She has her own skirts now and will wear them to her annual jog-a-thon at school and to local 5K's (when I can convince her to join me). She tells me she loves the skirts and wants to me just like me.

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & every one of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Everyone has a story, and we want to hear YOURS! The #teamsparkle community is such a loving and inclusive group, but often times we are tackling our runs solo. Knowing your teammates can help you to feel more a part of the running community. If you would like to share your story, whether it is about how you got started running, what motivates your running, why you love running, or how running has changed your life, please let us know! We would love to feature you on an upcoming “Meet The Team” post – so email us at meettheteam@sparkleathletic.com!

Favorite Run – Boston & Cambridge, MA: The Charles River Path

February 16, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 40359 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-02-16 13:24:42 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-02-16 21:24:42 [post_content] =>
There are so many amazing places to run that we want to help spread the word about some of your favorites. Maybe you will be visiting a new area and looking for a great running trail or in search of your next racecation. Whatever the case, we hope to highlight some of the best places to run around the world!
Up next to share her favorite run is Kelly, @wings_and_fur. She hails from the Boston area and has spent many miles and countless hours along the Charles River Path, so of course it was the first spot that came to mind when deciding on her favorite run to share with the #teamsparkle community. If you are ever in the area, Kelly strongly suggests that you make sure to get in a few miles along this path.

Favorite Run: The Charles River Path in Boston, MA

Runner: Kelly Location: Charles River Running Path - Boston & Cambridge, MA Address: Storrow Drive (Boston side) and Memorial Drive (Cambridge side)

Fun Fact:

If you run on this path in the early mornings on the week leading up to the Boston Marathon, you will have the elites for company. I’ve even spotted Meb.

Distance:

Choose your own adventure; typically 5 - 8 miles. I like to start by the Hatch Shell (home of the July 4th Boston Pops concert) and loop over past the Museum of Science to the Cambridge side of the river and back via the Mass Ave Bridge (gives you a great view of the Fenway Park Citgo sign from the bridge).  (the map below starts at a local gym. I typically run down Cambridge Street to the Hatch Shell and go from there).

Difficulty:

Easy and flat.  You’re running at sea level (and sometimes below!)

Why You Love It:

I work in Boston and this path is not only easy to get to, but scenic.  The cherry blossoms in the spring, the foliage in the fall and I’ve spotted great blue herons and hawks during runs.  It's maintained year round too, and its fun to see other brave souls out on cold wintry days.

Parking:

Limited street parking on the Boston side, but there are a couple of lots on the Cambridge side.  Its also easily accessible by mbta subway. Red line Charles/MGH stop and Green line Science Park stop.

Favorite Place To Eat Post-Run:

I’m a Dunkin Donuts girl - there’s nothing like grabbing a coffee (or much needed donut) after a run from any of the multiple locations.  A big thanks to Kelly for sharing her favorite run with us. We hope that this series turns into a list of super cool runs across the country and even internationally - that way if you are ever in the area you know of a recommended route from a fellow #teamsparkle member. If you’d like to be featured on an upcoming Sparkle Athletic “Favorite Runs” post, please email us at favoriteruns@sparkleathletic.com.

Meet #teamsparkle – @jedijen11 continues running as she becomes a mom

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is the new mama @jedijen11, aka Jennifer.

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Jennifer: Before 2010, I hid from activities that required any type of physical activity. When I was a band director, as a part of summer conditioning, we required the students to run. I could not keep up... at all! So, over spring break in 2010, I started the Couch to 5k running plan without telling anyone. (In case I failed, ya know?!) By the time I got to the sixth week of training, I decided to tell people about my new running hobby. I was encouraged to run a 5k race, and a whole new world opened up to me! I had no idea these races existed, I just wanted to participate in summer conditioning with my students! It's safe to say I was bitten by the running bug. I have now completed 1 30 mile run (for my 30th birthday), 11 full marathons, the Dopey Challenge, 24 half marathons, several Disney challenges, and too many 5 and 10ks to count! (Fun fact: my husband and I eloped in January 2015 during WDW Marathon weekend. He proposed to me after the WDW 10k and we got married later that day. It's normal to run a half and full marathon for your honeymoon, right?!) My biggest achievement in running, though, is running through my pregnancy, especially when some doubted me! Baby Hilger and I ran 4 half marathons, including two Disney 5k, 10k, half challenges, and several shorter races!

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

J: I first found #teamsparkle on instagram and will be forever thankful for social media because of that! I had already completed races in tutus, but the sparkle seemed extra empowering to me. (And I was right!) I trained really hard for my 4th full marathon and wanted some extra motivation to achieve my goal. I was planning to run the Nike Women's Full Marathon in 2013, so I chose the turquoise Sparkle Athletic sparkle skirt and visor to help me stay motivated to receive my little blue Tiffany's bag at the finish line from a handsome fireman! I am pleased to report that I achieved my goal of running a full marathon under 5 hours, 15 minutes and set a marathon PR by more than 15 minutes! Sure, I trained hard, but I'm convinced that sparkle gave me the confidence I needed to never give up during the race!

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

J: Wow! I have so many answers to this question! The social media community constantly inspires me!  I am able to stay connected and motivated by runners from around the world. My local running community also inspires me! I have been lucky enough to serve as a running coach for the last three years (including during my pregnancy) through a local running store, Red Coyote Running & Fitness. Helping others achieve their goals inspires me on a level that's hard to explain. Also, I'm very goal oriented myself! Working to achieve what I think might be unachievable goals, inspires me to get out there and train, even when I would rather stay on the couch! Lastly, I'm inspired to run because I'm able to run. I truly value every mile, whether I'm alone or with my best running pals, I'm most at peace during a run. I also learned how important being outside is for my spirits when I ran during my pregnancy. Obviously my pace and distances were not what they were before pregnancy, but getting out there and moving was such a connecting time between me and my baby. (And my husband who always takes care of us!) I'm inspired by my son who just entered the world, to keep running to be a good, active, and happy role model for him. Running through pregnancy reminded me of my love for simply running, no matter the pace!

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

J: I have the biggest sweet tooth, but my favorite indulgence has to be DONUTS! During my pregnancy, my husband and I went on a "donut date" every week. I was so thrilled when the donut Sparkle Athletic skirt came out and bought it immediately! (And thankful for that stretchy waistband so I can still wear that skirt now!)

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

J: My friends tease me that I have a sparkle skirt in every color, but I still have many more to add to my collection! But if I had to choose one product, it would be the Sparkle Athletic visors! They are unbelievably comfortable and perfect for any run. My ultimate favorite product combo would be my rainbow Sparkle Athletic skirt, rainbow checkerboard visor, and rainbow Shwings. I wore these for my 11th marathon, which was the NYC Marathon in 2015. I set a lofty goal (for me) to run a sub-5 hour marathon after a few previous attempts. Having a marathon time that started with a 4 was a "pre-motherhood" goal I had for myself. I trained on a new level with the support of so many around me. I thought the rainbow theme was a perfect reminder as I ran through the streets of NYC of many things coming together to help me achieve that goal. (I'm happy to report that I ran the marathon under 5 hours, with more than 3 minutes to spare. I ran it with a negative half split AND set a PR of more than 12 minutes. Oh, and I welcomed my son in to the world six weeks ago!)

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

J: Feeling empowered! Most of my life I have struggled with just being myself. I let people dull my sparkle until I gained confidence through running to just be myself. Adding a Sparkle Athletic skirt has only helped my confidence! When I ran through my pregnancy, I started wearing a sparkle skirt for most runs instead of just for races. Even though I knew everything was normal, sometimes it was a mental struggle when I started to gain weight and my pace slowed down, what used to be a warm-up was now my long run. Sparkle Athletic skirts made me still feel empowered with every mile!

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & everyone of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Race Day Running Essentials – @runnerchick29’s Authentic Athens Marathon

February 9, 2017

Laying out your #FlatSparkle prior to a race (or even a training run) can help calm some of the pre-run jitters by helping to make sure you have everything you need when the starting gun goes off. Today Kristin, aka @runnerchick29 on social media, is here to share with us some of her race day essentials…

@runnerchick29's Race Day Running Essentials

This #FlatRunner was for The Authentic Athens Marathon. You know the run that started it all, from Marathon to Athens?! It is extremely safe to say that this is the furthest I’ve traveled for a race and since it was out of the country I was extremely nervous that I was going to forget something. When I first started thinking about what my outfit was going to be for this race, I knew sparkle was a MUST. So I was able to pick out some great pieces to take with me to run in. I was keeping an eye on the weather so I had both cold and warm weather outfits picked out but luckily the weather was on my side and I knew I would need my warm weather outfit before I left.

I was careful to lay everything out at home and make sure that I was not forgetting anything. I mean, come on, I arrive in Greece and don’t have something essential for the race. Yikes, No thank you. I packed my outfit in a gallon zip lock bag and put it in my carry on. I could just see myself arriving in Greece and seeing that my luggage did not make it on the correct flight or it got lost. So, I made sure that on the way over it was with me the entire time.

If you happen to follow me on Instagram, you know that I typically have the same outfits. Sparkle Athletic skirt and visor, PRO Compression socks, a tank top, Momentum Jewelry wraps, and my Garmin watch, RoadID and Brooks running shoes. Those are my go to make my outfits fun and exciting. Because why not?
It’s taken some time to figure out what works for me and what does not and I’m still trying out new things to see if they work.

A big thanks to Kristin for sharing some of her race day essentials with #teamsparkle.

As we all know, race day can be a stressful time. One way to relieve some of the pressure is by making sure you have everything you may need when the starting gun goes off. Whether you are traveling across the country for a racecation or down the street for a local race, having a list and checking it twice to make sure you have all of your necessities can be the difference between a successful race and a stressful race. Everyone is different when it comes to what they need or desire on race day, which is why we thought asking the amazing #teamsparkle community about their race day essentials could be a great resource for us all. Maybe it will serve as a reminder of something you forgot to pack or tip you off to a new product you’d like to try. If you’d like to be featured on an upcoming Sparkle Athletic “Race Day Essentials” post, please email us at raceday@sparkleathletic.com.

Meet #teamsparkle – @stephjspeer got goosebumps when discovering running

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic is the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is Stephanie, aka @stephjspeer!

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Stephanie: Running was never on my radar. In fact, exercise, in general, wasn't. In the early hours on a Sunday morning in January 2012 that changed. At age 51, out of shape and feeling the empty nest blues as my 3 children were now young adults I turned on my computer and did my typical Sunday morning routine. Check email. Facebook. CNN. Twitter. Across my twitter feed, I saw a post about people running through Disneyland. Wait, what? I had just discovered runDisney. Goosebumps. BUT there was NO way I could ever run a half marathon. Or even a half mile. Or could I? My first half marathon was the runDisney Tinkerbell Half one year later in January 2013 and I was blessed to be able to do it with my two daughters and my sister. I had discovered something I loved and it's been part of my life ever since and will be for as long as my body allows. first-half

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

S: Throughout my first year attempting to teach my "mature" sedentary body to actually get off the couch and exercise I did a lot of online searching for information and motivation. These adorable running skirts from this company called Sparkle Athletic caught my attention but my first thought was I'm too old to carry off such a young "hip" look. (Does anyone say "hip" anymore?) I kept going back to the website and finally threw caution to the wind and bought one not only for myself but for my daughters and sister to wear at the Tinkerbell Half. I have never looked back and have worn a #teamsparkle skirt in every running event I have done since. My first skirt was the turquoise and to this day it is still my favorite and I get this sentimental feeling when I wear it remembering how proud I was crossing the finish line at my first half. Looking young and hip, you know. the-girls

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

S: All of you in the running community inspire me. Juggling real life, families, relationships, careers, illness, injuries, and the hustle and bustle of daily life but STILL lacing up your shoes and stepping outside is so inspiring to see. Everyone has a story and even if I don't know YOUR story, I know you have one but still move forward in a positive way.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

S: I'm not a sweets fan (Wait, what???) but give me a big plate of cheesy black bean nachos and a Bloody Mary and I'm good! nachos

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

S: Skirts! I have 20 and it's always fun to decide which one I'm going to wear for an upcoming event! Of course, I've been known to change my mind last minute when I get to an expo and the girls have introduced a new one that I HAVE to have.

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

S: It's FUN! I remember the first time I did a non-Disney race where people don't generally dress up and I thought other runners might think it was weird I was wearing a sparkle running skirt but I didn't care because I loved it. That wasn't the reaction I got at all, I received so many positive comments, even having other runners ask where to get one. Running in a Sparkle Athletic skirt makes me smile and relax and enjoy the course. Of course, there is always that young and hip thing. seahawks

Favorite Run – Oceanside, CA: The Strand

February 2, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 33291 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-02-02 12:24:42 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-02-02 20:24:42 [post_content] => There are so many amazing places to run that we want to help spread the word about some of your favorites. Maybe you will be visiting a new area and looking for a great running trail or in search of your next racecation. Whatever the case, we hope to highlight a few of the best places we have found to lace up our running sneakers and head out for a few miles! First up to share her favorite place to run is Carlee, aka @CarleeMcDot. She loves running along the Pacific Ocean in Oceanside, CA (and from her recount of the area, we can totally see why). The laid back vibes, beach town feel, flat elevation and serene views make for a perfect place to get in a run.

Favorite Run: The Strand in Oceanside, CA

Runner: @CarleeMcDot Location: Oceanside: The Strand Address: 750 S The Strand, Oceanside, CA 92054 Rocks

Fun Fact:

At 1,942 feet, the historical Oceanside Pier is one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast.

Distance:

You can make this run anywhere from a short jog to a 8 mile route without having to do much doubling back or weaving. I normally start at the south end of the Strand (at Wisconsin Street), will run northbound along the Pacific Ocean, up onto the Pier, back onto the Strand, towards the Harbor, around the west side of the Harbor and then around the east side before heading back towards Wisconsin Street on the Strand. OceansideTheStrand

Difficulty:

There is very little elevation gain or loss along the Strand (unless you run up onto the Pier), so I would consider this an easy route with plenty of drinking fountains along the way (in the summer there is even a snack bar and shaved ice stand, along with food carts near the Pier).

Why You Love It:

Not only are the views amazing (I mean, it is hard to beat the Pacific Ocean, no matter the time of year), there is a large bike/ pedestrian lane along the beach. There are no stop lights along the route and the vibe is very 'beach town chill'. I try and run by the beach at least twice a week. The sea breezes, stunning scenery and relaxed vibe are a must when you are overwhelmed with the hustle and bustle of life. Sunset

Parking:

Since I normally start the route at the south end of the Strand, I park along Pacific Street as close to Wisconsin Street as possible (watch for the Street Sweeping hours on Mondays). There is normally plenty of parking and there are stairways along Pacific Street down to the Strand if you have to park a little further away. Parking near the Pier is also an option, but most of the lots now have a fee.

Favorite Place To Eat Post-Run:

One of my favorite places to eat after a workout is at Swami's Cafe which is right up the street from the Pier. I love their Pitaya Bowls and also appreciate that they offer vegetarian options for a lot of their sandwiches (mock bacon, chicken, turkey, etc). PitayaBowl A big thanks to Carlee for sharing about her favorite runs with us. We hope that this series turns into a list of super cool runs across the country and even internationally - that way if you are ever in the area you know of a recommended route from a fellow #teamsparkle member. What To Wear Under Your Sparkle Running Skirt

February 1, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 40793 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-02-01 13:26:24 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-02-01 21:26:24 [post_content] => It's a question we get all the time here at Sparkle Athletic: "What should I wear under my sparkle running skirt?". Our response: "Whatever you'd like." As you've probably already realized, our sparkle running skirts do NOT include shorts. The reason for this is simple... we know what it’s like to have a favorite pair of running shorts, compression shorts, or leggings that you prefer to wear while running. We designed our skirts with this in mind, which means you can wear our sparkle running skirts over everything (& anything)  you already love to run in. We want you to be comfortable. And sparkly! Why sacrifice one when you can have both? Some #teamsparkle members swear by their lucky leggings, while others rock their favorite running shorts (or even running skirt) underneath. That's the beauty of our skirts, you don't need to wear anything "special" to wear underneath...  whatever you normally wear, whatever is already in your closet is most likely perfect for wearing under our skirts. Our lightweight sparkle running skirts will help you shine, whether you’re running to win or just running for fun. So run like a girl. Be loud. Be confident. Be noticed. Be Awesome. Join #teamsparkle. Meet #teamsparkle – @kgriff_run is running ‘until she can’

We think THE best part about Sparkle Athletic are the AHH-MAZING people that make up #teamsparkle. We are so incredibly lucky to “meet” (IRL and virtually) so many team members, but we thought it’s about time we introduced the people that make up this inspiring & motivating community.

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is another member of the #teamsparkle #Ragnar4Rett team Kristen, aka @kgriff_run!

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Kristen: I started running distance after I graduated from college and was officially a retired sprinter. I had no idea what to do, but I figured I would be up for a new challenge after anything over 200 meters was "too long." I ran my first half marathon in April of 2013 and fell in love with the distance! After three more half marathons, one with Girl Power 2 Cure at the Disney Princess Half in February 2014, I decided to run a half marathon in every state! Now I'm 14 states down, 17 half marathons, 3 marathons, 2 half Ironman and 1 full Ironman distance into my endurance athletic adventure. I can't wait for what the future holds! Almost every single race since February 2014 (triathlon or not) has had some piece of Sparkle Athletic in my gear, and has been ran with my cousin Martilee and Rett Syndrome in mind. fb_img_1475540489775

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

K: I first joined during state number six, California. I had met the girls of #teamsparkle and Sparkle Athletic while in Florida running the Disney Princess Half Marathon as part of Girl Power 2 Cure. I didn't have a Sparkle Athletic skirt at the time, but purchased one shortly there after for Disneyland's Inaugural Super Heroes Half Marathon, again as part of Girl Power 2 Cure. Obviously, my first skirt was the blue with white stars to represent Wonder Woman, because my cousin Martilee is the strongest super hero I know. fb_img_1475540558572

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

K: I honestly get asked this a lot, and my answer hasn't changed for almost three years. My cousin Martilee is my inspiration, motivation and determination to keep putting one step in front of the other. She has Rett Syndrome which renders her completely dependent upon those around her. Luckily, Sparkle Athletic and Girl Power 2 Cure have teamed up to fight Rett Syndrome together... a match made in heaven! I've often competed and raced with names of those affected by Rett Syndrome written on my body, awareness tattoos, tank tops, etc to help one more person learn about Rett Syndrome and why it is so important to me. fb_img_1475541235418

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

K: Oh man... savory indulgence is #ALLTHETACOS!!!! My favorite sweet indulgence is clearly doughnuts. So many sprinkles and options, so little time!

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

K: I'm a hat lover. Rett Syndrome. Baseball hat. Visor. Give me all of them! There's one for every (running or non running) outfit! fb_img_1475540513085

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

K: I feel so STRONG with Sparkle Athletic at my side because they constantly empower women to be who they are, love who they are, and strive for their best! They have become a family, versus a team or community. And the support... WOW! Any time there is anything Sparkle Athletic anywhere, it's like we all cling to each other and help each other out! fb_img_1475541405904

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & everyone of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Race Day Running Essentials – @sarafilops

January 26, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 40338 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-01-26 11:05:22 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-01-26 19:05:22 [post_content] =>
Laying out your #FlatSparkle prior to a race (or even a training run) can help calm some of the pre-run jitters by helping to make sure you have everything you need when the starting gun goes off. Today Sarah, aka @sarafilops on Instagram, is here to share with us some of her race day essentials…

@sarafilops's Race Day Running Essentials

I’m still relatively new to running – almost 4 years – and I’m still finding new and awesome products all the time. Here are my current must haves for an awesome race day!
I don’t put all my race day essentials in my #FlatSparkle pictures; I tend to keep them simple. So, here’s the breakdown of essentials that make the race day posts:
  • * A Sparkle Athletic visor. I never run without one. This is true for races, training runs, any althetic pursuit. This is my secret weapon against sun, rain and snow.
  • * A coordinating tank or shirt. I don’t like fitted tanks too much, and my current favorite race day shirts are from Old Navy and Athleta. Amazon is another great source for cheap costume shirts. I tend to wear a lot of black race shirts though.
  • * Asics with Sparkle Athletic Shwings. As a mild pronator, I need a support shoe when I run and I’ve fallen in love with the Kayano series from Asics. I also have multiple Shwings to sparkle my shoes.
  • KT Tape. I used this to help recover from a severe ankle sprain and planter fasciitis. I still use it to help with foot pain. Another secure use, it helps me prevent sports bra chafing.
  • * My race bib. Don’t forget the safety pins – and if you’re like me, you have a whole container of them saved up.
  • * Jacket and gloves. They aren’t usually in my flat Run Disney pictures – I’m talking to you Wine and Dine 2015 – but I live in the Northeast and we can get some cold races. The NYC Half – currently my PR! – was 28 degrees at the start!
  • * At least one cat. My cats love sparkle too – well, they love being in the pictures anyway!
I definitely have other race day essentials I need to have the best and funnest races that don’t get featured in my #FlatSparkle. Here are my other essentials.
  • Garmin. I currently have a Garmin Forerunner 210 and it’s been a great watch for the last 3 years. But, I’m currently saving up to buy a Garmin Forerunner 235 which has built in Run/Walk options!!
  • Elomi Sports Bra. Fortunately or unfortunately, I have a large bust and it makes running a challenge sometimes. I’ve found Elomi sports bras, which go up to a K cup, can really help hold the girls in place while running. On the downside, they do have underwire, but at certain sizes, you don’t have much choice.
  • 2Tom’s Anti-Chafing. Because my sports bra does have underwire, I have to use this to prevent painful chafing! It works really well to help keep that pain down to a minimum. I also use it on my thighs and feet with great success.
  • Roo Sport Pocket. I discovered this fantastic running pouch at the Tower of Terror Expo in 2013 and have worn it out since then. With multiple zippers and pockets, it holds my keys, IDs and money, iPhone and extra fuel.
  • Nathan Handheld water bottle. I have two of these I rotate, but not only do the bottles fit in my hand easily, they have thumbholes to fit comfortably. I usually fill mine with Gatorade on race day.
  • * Fuel. I can NOT stand gels. I’ve tried hard to like them, but I can’t do it. I do like the chews however and I rotate between Gu Chews, Clif Bloks and Honey Stinger.
  • * Life Essentials. My license, health insurance ID card, debit card and cash. I want to make sure I’m covered in case anything comes up. If I’d had cash during the Walt Disney World marathon, I could’ve gotten a Coke during my race and it would have been UH-MAZING at the time. Sadly, no coke for me.
  • * Post-race relief. When I cross the finish line, there are a few things I want immediately! VitaCoCo with Pineapple mixed with Tropical Nuun and my Oofos slippers. I’m also a fan of dry clothing as I tend to be a sweater, so I’ll usually add an extra pair of shorts or capris to my gear bag.
A big thanks to Sarah for sharing some of her race day essentials with #teamsparkle.

Meet #teamsparkle – run streaker @daniellvecchione

With that being said, it's time to meet a member of #teamsparkle. Up next is the run streaker Daniell, aka @daniellvecchione! img_2460

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Daniell: I decided to seriously take up running after my husband’s second runDisney half marathon and seeing how much fun it looked. As soon as registration opened for the 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon I quickly signed up. I didn’t really start taking my training too serious right away, but after my husband convinced me to sign up for the Walt Disney World Half in 2014 I figured I needed to put my running in high gear. At that time I was not even able to run a full mile without stopping several times. Over the next few months, I gained a ton of confidence and knew I’d finish. I finished the first half in my goal time, so I was super happy with that. I have now continued to improve my pace and love for running. My husband and I just completed our second year of running at least a mile per day. img_2053

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

D: I knew I had to have a skirt for my first half. I did a ton of Pinterest browsing to get inspired. I ended up deciding to run as Snow White, so my first skirt was yellow. I even used the same one for my next half at Walt Disney World to run as Princess Belle. img_2580

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

D: My husband and kids inspire me daily. When my husband challenged me to start a run streak I thought he was crazy, especially since he wanted to start the day after I just ran a half marathon. Now that I have completed two years, I can see how much my world has shifted and I hope that I am now inspiring my friends and family to get out and be active on a daily basis. img_2017

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

D: I love ice cream, that is probable my biggest weakness. But I pretty much love anything sweet.

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

D: My go to are the visors. I wear one pretty much on every run. They are made so well and I just love the fit and look of them. I get tons of compliments since I own a ton of colors I can match them to my outfit of the day. trey-1767

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

D: I love the way I am able to come up with cute and simple costume ideas by using the skirts and visors. When I run in local runs it is not very often we see people running in sparkly skirts or even tutu’s so it makes me stand out and they are great conversation starters. Plus I just love to dress up so they are the perfect addition to all of my running outfits. img_2554

“Get Pumped” Running Playlist – @breathedeeplyandsmile

Looking for some tunes to get you pumped for your run? Never fear, Sparkle Athletic is here and we’ve got you covered!

getpumped_runningplaylist Next up is a running playlist from Lauren, aka @breathedeeplyandsmile on social media. On some runs, Lauren rocks out, and on others she goes media-less. She really likes music as a motivator to help her out the door, or on race day so she can jam during the tough miles. She used music this past summer during her marathon training for many of her solo long runs. Despite having to get up before the sun and running many hot and humid miles in Baltimore, she felt those long runs were really fun thanks to the playlists and music she put together. 20160619_102319_edit1 This playlist includes R&B and hip-hop songs from the 2000s. Lauren put together this playlist in the middle of her training cycle and listened to it so many times because it was so fun to run to. These songs took her on a little trip down memory lane, with some of them evoking nostalgia for high school and college.

"Get Pumped" Running Playlist         by @breathedeeplyandsmile

‘Get Ur Freak On’ by Missy Elliott ‘Yeah!’ by Usher, Lil Jon, Ludacris ‘Lose My Breathe’ by Destiny's Child ‘Bring 'Em Out’ by T.I. ‘One, Two Step’ by Ciara feat. Missy Elliott ‘Crazy In Love’ by Beyonce feat Jay-Z 'In Da Club' by 50 Cents ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem ‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind’ by Eve feat. Gwen Stefani ‘Stronger’ by Kayne West We may be a little bias, but we think the song choices Lauren made will help kick your running playlist up a notch. It may be hard, especially when you want to rock out to your favorite track, but safety first!**

Meet #teamsparkle – @babydoll_brea

WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 36303 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-01-18 13:49:01 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-01-18 21:49:01 [post_content] =>

Up next is Brea, aka @babydoll_brea on social media!

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Brea: I began running 16 years ago out of desperation; every time I left my infant son at the gym childcare, he would start crying until he started dry-heaving. I started off running a few blocks with him in a baby jogger. It took a year of running before it was something I looked forward to doing, and then I was hooked: I began competing in 5k and 10k races, and then summoned the nerve to register for a half marathon. Racing 13 miles was the hardest I have ever pushed myself running...until I ran my first marathon. Two years later, I ran a second marathon to celebrate my 40th birthday. Last January, the runDisney Star Wars event was my 20th half marathon. It's been a wild ride and running has pushed me farther mentally and physically than I have ever thought I could go.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

B: I unknowingly joined #teamsparkle in April, 2014. A friend was getting a team together to participate in an obstacle course-style race called the Warrior Dash. My daughter and I ran the event with several women we met that day. One of those women was Brenna Savage, and she gave me my first sparkle skirt (black and silver). It turned out that Brenna is the niece of one of the Sparkle Athletic founders, Carrie Lundell. I had never heard of #teamsparkle before that day but Brenna had visors, arm sleeves and sparkle skirts for all of us to wear. It was so much fun! Despite the fact that we were covered in mud, we all still sparkled! 14543377_10211395725035255_926572063_n

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

B: Running is one of the few things that truly clears my head. Not only has it been great for my cardiovascular health, but my mental health as well. I'm inspired by the fitness accounts that I follow on social media; they're people who aren't out to sell anything and get out there daily without excuses. And last, the event that surpassed any PR was running the Disneyland Half Marathon in August 2014 with my daughter.

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

B: I love good chocolate, particularly 'exotic' bars with orange peel or flavors like lavender or chili. Yes please!

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

B: My skirts! I absolutely love them! My instagram post of 'flat Brea' with my runDisney Star Wars sparkle outfit is probably the most liked photo on my account. 1827

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

B: It helps take away race-day nerves. It's hard to be too serious when I'm rocking so much sparkle! 1852

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & everyone of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.

Race Day Running Essentials – @sherojaz92’s Renegade Race Terrifying Ten-Miler and Spooky 10K/5K

January 12, 2017
WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 38986 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2017-01-12 07:47:19 [post_date_gmt] => 2017-01-12 15:47:19 [post_content] =>
Laying out your #FlatSparkle prior to a race (or even a training run) can help calm some of the pre-run jitters by helping to make sure you have everything you need when the starting gun goes off. Today Jazmin, aka @sherojaz92 on Instagram, is here to share with us some of her race day essentials…

@sherojaz92's Race Day Running Essentials

If you’re a costume runner like me, the things you use on race day may constantly change. But even then, there are always a few things that are essential. It takes time to figure exactly what you need and these needs will change over time. Here are the things I currently make sure I always need for race day!
flatrunner First things first, I always wear a Sparkle Athletic skirt. No ifs, ands, or buts. They have every color so you can be every and any character! Of course, I recommend choosing a character/theme first and then the skirt. These skirts look good with shorts, capris, or tights, so you can wear them all year long. I’ve had people ask me if the skirts are comfortable and yes, they are! They aren’t heavy at all and aren’t tight at the waist either. Plus, you get to sparkle throughout your whole race! halloween-run A lot of people tell me they don’t like carrying water while they run. I am the complete opposite. I have this irrational fear of getting thirsty during a race and not having a water station anywhere near. Plus, it makes me feel more prepared. Currently, I carry this Nathan handheld water bottle. It is amazing! It fits perfectly into your hand so it doesn’t bother you. Sometimes I forget I’m even carrying it. Plus, it has a zippered pocket for me to put my Humagel or Probar Chews in! waterbottle Shoes are important. Make sure to have shoes that you have run in and you know are comfortable for you feet. Even better, go to a running store and get fitted! I have gone through several running shoes and injuries. If I had to choose, the best shoes I’ve had have come from Asics and Skechers. Another reason shoes are important is that they (hopefully) match your costume! I try to have at least one pair of grey or black shoes because they go with everything. If you want to give them some pizzazz, add some shwings or light-up shoelaces! shoelights Let’s talk sports bras. This is a very important race essential that many people ignore. Please get a sports bra that is comfortable and doesn’t make you chafe on long runs! My favorite is the “High Support Racerback Sports Bra” by Champion, easily found at Target. It’s affordable and cute. This bra is the only one that I feel works best for long-distances, so I make sure it’s always clean for race day! redridinghood I do a lot of runDisney races. So, I make sure I always have my armband and phone with me so I can take as many pictures as I want. I don’t suggest just carrying your phone in your hand because there is a high risk of dropping it ( I speak from experience). Another reason I have my armband and phone with me is because sometimes you just lose motivation. That’s where music comes in. My phone always has a running playlist on it, so I’m ready for those difficult races.

A big thanks to Jazmin for sharing some of her race day essentials with #teamsparkle.

Up next is the ever so sweet @itskatierachel! jexi-l2f

Tell us about your past race/running experience:

Katie: I signed up for my first 5k as an incentive to get fit after delivering my twin boys in December of 2012. A Disney fanatic, it was a no-brainer to choose the Wine & Dine weekend as my first running experience. After that 5k, I was hooked, and immediately began researching more RunDisney events. I found that I could fundraise for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals while running the Princess Half Marathon that February, and there I found what would become my passion – running for others. CMN Hospitals is an organization I am grateful for, as they were instrumental in providing care for my preemie twins, and for subsequent care for hearing loss. I have run every Princess race since, raising over $4,500 for the organization that is so dear to my heart. princess16-2407-xl Running for others took on new meaning while working at a Sparkle Athletic booth at Iron Woman in 2015 when I saw a really awesome group of people wearing pink shirts that read Ainsley’s Angels. We got to talking, and I immediately knew I had to be an Angel. In addition to ensuring everyone can experience endurance events, we also aim to build awareness though inclusion and activism throughout the community. There is nothing like crossing a finish line with an Angel Rider – it is a shared joy that every runner should experience. ainsleysangels As I continue to grow as a runner, I like to find new and exciting challenges. This year I will compete in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., and test my limits for distance by completing my first ultra marathon.

We are so glad you are a part of #teamsparkle. When did you first join and what color was your first skirt?

K: I wore Sparkle for my very first race in 2013! I costumed as R2D2 for the Wine & Dine 5k, and wore a gunmetal skirt. It was the perfect first skirt to purchase and has probably seen over 30 races. first-race-and-first-skirt

What/Who inspires you to continue running?

K: Definitely my children, Logan and Lennon, as well as the children I run for. The bonds our family has made with other CMN and Ainsley Angels families are invaluable. I also know I am setting an example for them to stay fit and live healthy lives. When I have a bad day, or don’t want to run, I think of the people that running has brought into my life and I have to get out there and go. dscn4231

We all know how much #teamsparkle loves their treats as much as they love running... What’s your favorite indulgence?

K: My absolute favorite treat is the rice krispie treats with chocolate drizzle from the Main Street Bakery in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

Which Sparkle Athletic product is your favorite "go to"?

K: My white visor. It matches everything, and I find myself wearing it all the time –even when I’m not running! ainsleys-angels

What is one of your favorite parts of racing in a Sparkle Athletic skirt?

K: I love the mixture of looking cute while still kicking butt. The sparkle makes running fun! my-husband-in-sparkle

Thank YOU so very much for "joining the team." Individually each & everyone of you is amazing, but as a "team" we ROCK.
